K-12 Students & Stress

Young students experience several transitions from kindergarten to the high school classroom. There are growth spurts, development stages, social changes, and major events that occur throughout critical school-age years. In a little over a decade, young students will be expected to navigate new challenges, stressful situations, and life’s many highs and lows. The coping strategies developed within this period — whether healthy or unhealthy — may be carried on into adulthood and have lasting impacts.

K-12 Students & Sleep

Primary and secondary students have major sleep needs. Moreover, teens may need even more sleep than their younger student peers, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics. Studies show, however, that students of all ages are not getting enough sleep. Sleep cycles change as children grow and can be disrupted by heightened school demands, extracurricular activities, external expectations, and technology use.

For young students, learning to manage stress and sleep is key to proper cognitive development, the ability to learn and manage emotions, and overall well-being. For primary and secondary schools, the impacts can be far-reaching – affecting attendance, grade point averages, graduation rates, and more. It is critical for schools to teach students how to manage stress and sleep effectively from the very start of their education journey – from early childhood curriculum onward.
